aespa (kor. 에스파) is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. They debuted on 17 November 2020 with the single ‘Black Mamba’ and are one of the leading groups of the fourth generation of K-pop. The name aespa is a combination of the words ‘avatar’, ‘experience’ and ‘aspect’, which emphasises the group's innovative concept: the connection of real members with virtual avatars.
Aespa is characterised by a futuristic and technological concept. Each member has a virtual avatar alter ego that exists in the so-called KWANGYA universe. This concept is continued in the group's music videos, storylines and marketing materials, offering a unique blend of music, technology and storytelling.
After their debut with ‘Black Mamba’, other successful songs such as ‘Next Level’ and ‘Savage’ followed. These songs established aespa as one of the most successful groups of their generation, both in South Korea and internationally.
